Depp as Dillinger
Public Enemies gives actor a shot at telling infamous figure’s story.
Michael Mann has a thing for American renegades.
Some of them were created by others (Hannibal Lecter, in “Manhunter,’’ Natty Bumppo, in “The Last of the Mohicans’’). Some of them Mann created himself (Crockett and Tubbs, in “Miami Vice,’’ Al Pacino and Robert De Niro’s cat-and-mouse cop and crook, in “Heat’’). At least one created himself (“Ali’’).
The population of that last category is about to double: Mann’s “Public Enemies,’’ with Johnny Depp as Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger, opens Wednesday.
When best (song) isn't good enough
No Oscar will be awarded for best song at next year's ceremony if none of the tunes are deemed to be good enough, organizers have announced.
"We're trying to improve the quality," said composer Bruce Broughton, head of the Academy's music branch.
He added the move would make entries "as good as possible".
Farrah Fawcett dies at 62
Farrah Fawcett, who soared to fame as a national sex symbol in the late 1970s on television's campy "Charlie's Angels" and in a swimsuit poster that showcased her feathery mane and made her a generation's favorite pinup, died today. She was 62.
Fawcett, whose celebrity overshadowed her ability as a serious actress, was diagnosed with a rare anal cancer in 2006. She died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, said Paul Bloch, her publicist.
