About Talk Cinema
A CURATED SERIES OF SURPRISES
Sneak Previews of Essential New Cinema Followed by Lively Conversation
Harlan Jacobson’s TALK CINEMA showcases innovative independent and foreign films that have not yet been theatrically released. Screenings are followed by discussions led by distinguished critics and filmmakers.
Designed for audiences who want a curated series of films and lecturers, the surprise factor is part of the fun. Audiences don't know what they will see until they arrive at the theatre. This allows busy people to be part of the cultural conversation without having to slog through the mix at the multiplex.
Some selections are meant to stretch the viewer’s perspective, some are meant to expand the viewer’s geopolitical horizons, and always to inform... New cinema is viewed as a peephole into new territory, whether it is cinematic, thematic, political or geographic.
Talk Cinema was founded in 1990 by Harlan Jacobson, a New York based film critic has been a regular outside contributor to USA Today covering international film festivals and is the former Editor-in-Chief of Film Comment Magazine. Covering the film industry for more than 30 years, he culls his selections from the key discovery festivals around the world — Cannes, Sundance and Toronto among them.
Everyone is a critic: One of the program’s distinctive features is the opportunity for members to review films and to refer films to each other. This is a great way to deepen your viewing experience and make friends.
History: Now in its 19th year, Talk Cinema, created by Harlan Jacobson, exists to give film lovers a chance to be part of a community.
